Abdominoplasty
Charles has done hundreds of abdominoplasties (tummy tucks) for post pregnancy changes or following massive weight loss. The procedure removes excess abdominal skin and tightens separated abdominal wall muscle if this is required.
The surgery is sometimes combined with other procedures such as a breast list as part of a so-called “mummy makeover” or with removal of excess skin on the arms and outer chest after weight loss.
Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and there is a one-night stay for most people. There is a drain that stays in for 1-3 days and a stretchable abdominal binder which we supply.
A standard abdominoplasty leaves a scar running from hip to hip but there are variations such as a mini-abdominoplasty for small skin folds through to extended abdominoplasty and fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty for extensive skin removal.
The risks will be discussed in detail at a consultation and an information sheet given about this. Examples of previous cases and where the scar sits will be shown.
There is a standard fixed cost for the surgery which is adjusted for additional procedures of for a BMI greater than 27 which reflects the increased average operating time and risk of complications. The current fixed cost is $24,460 which includes all hospital and anaesthetic costs and one night stay in hospital and all follow up and dressings in the first year after surgery. For a BMI of 27-30 the cost is $26,500 and for a BMI >30 the cost is $28,200.
Recovery is similar to a caesarian section. Gentle walking is encouraged. You will not be able to lift heavy objects or drive for several weeks. Housework should be delegated to others for several months.
Prior to the surgery it is important not to smoke or vape nicotine and to avoid supplements that increase bleeding such as arnica, fish oils, ginger, genko, St Johns wort and green powders.
